Bata Reyes Cup to have $500,000 prize fund

August 11th, 2009 admin

The Efren “Bata” Reyes Cup (named after the billiard legend), an international pool tournament slated to be launched early next year in Quezon City will have a purse of $500,000.

The event will be in honor of Reyes, the sport’s living legend, and will be presented by the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) in cooperation with Bugsy Promotions, Puyat Sports and Runout Promotions.

“Besides honoring the greatest player who has played the game, we’re also living up our tag as the best billiards-playing nation in the world and our country being the epicenter of the sport,” said BMPAP president Atty. Vic Rodriguez.

The tournament is expected to attract all the best cue artists in the planet as apart from the prestigious title, a lion’s share of $150,000 will also go to the champion.

He will then have a shot at playing against Reyes, who will come with a $50,000 bounty in his head.

The 55-year-old Reyes, known in the pool world as the Magician, is the acknowledged icon of the sport and is considered to be one of the all-time greats in the game.

His winning the World Pool Championship in 1999 catapulted billiards as one of the most popular sports among Filipinos.

He then won dozens of other titles, including the US Open, World 8-Ball Championship, million-dollar IPT World 8-Ball Open Championship and the inaugural edition of the World Cup of Pool with bosom buddy Francisco “Django” Bustamante as his partner.

Reyes also topped the Azbilliards Money List five times, including one in 2006 where he posted a record earning of $646,000.

Among those competing in the Reyes Cup are the country’s top pool masters led by former world champions Ronnie Alcano and Alex Pagulayan, former world no.1 Dennis Orcollo and Bustamante, and veteran internationalists Lee Van Corteza, Warren Kiamco, Ramil Gallego, Gandy Valle, Roberto Gomez, and Rodolfo Luat.

Bata leads billiards SEAG ‘Dream Team’

August 3rd, 2009 admin

SPEARHEADED BY THREE former world champions, two former world No. 1s and the reigning women’s world titlist, the Philippine billiards squad to the 25th Southeast Asian Games aptly deserves the “Dream Team” tag.

Hall of Famer Efren “Bata” Reyes and fellow ex-world titlists Alex Pagulayan and Ronnie Alcano should easily mow down the opposition in the biennial SEA Games set Dec. 9 to 18 in Vientiane, Laos.

Dennis Orcollo and the veteran Django Bustamante, both of whom have held the premier spot in the international pool circuit, are the other big guns in the men’s squad assembled by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines.

Reigning world 10-ball women’s champion Rubilen Amit leads the women’s squad that includes Iris Rañola and Mary Ann Basas.

The BSCP is so confident of its players, it issued a challenge to PSC chair Harry Angping to form his own billiards team and pit it against the “Dream Team.”

“This is the team that he (Angping) shooed away while practicing at the Rizal Memorial, [the one] he doesn’t want to support,” said billiards president Arturo Ilagan.

“Maybe we could put a prop bet that if his team-he can import foreigners-wins, we’ll give him the BSCP, but if he losses, he will support all the Filipino athletes and then resign.”
